Continuing on the Ring Road we see the beautiful snow capped Mt Hekla in the distance (still about 2 hours away). Mt Hekla is said to be one of the most active volcanos in Iceland as it has erupted at least once in almost every century since the Settlement Age. You can even see it in the background of our photos of the next waterfall on our trek on the South coast of Iceland.
AEgissidufoss (Ægissiðufoss) was a beautiful, wide waterfall on the river Ytri Rangá. There was a steep staircase built to allow you to walk close the the falls and experience the power of the falls. Annalise and Laurie made it to the path by the falls while I enjoyed the view from the stairs of turquoise water tumultuously racing to the sea. Returning to the Ring Road, we discovered a little local wool market in the hamlet of Hella. Hella is right where the Ring Road crosses the Ytri Rangá River. This little store sold handmade Icelandic sweaters, but also sold locally processed Icelandic, unbranded wool in lovely colors. I bought several colors and maybe someone will get a hand knitted Christmas present this year.
